One of the basic necessities for keeping a home orderly is the washing of clothes. It’s unavoidable since the activities of daily life mean that people will go outside, go to work, go to school, meet with people, participate in activities both athletic and not, and generally get on with their lives. This inevitably results in clothes getting dirty, either through actual contact with dirt, such as in outdoor sporting events, or through the accumulation of daily activities, like attending a BBQ with a lot of cooking, smoke, and food particles released into the air.

Regardless of how carefully you try to live your life, your clothes are going to get dirty, and they’re going to need to be washed. Part of that is simply a matter of comfort; dirty clothes don’t feel or smell as good as clean clothes. But a more important part of this is the health factor. Dirty clothes can, if left unwashed, become a breeding ground for bacteria that can make the wearer and people near the wearer fall ill.

The Practical Considerations

While almost everyone agrees that washing clothes is a necessary task for any home, it’s not something that should be done on a daily basis. Using a laundry machine draws both electrical energy as well as water, and it can do so in substantial amounts. Washing clothes for just one outfit and some underwear, or even just three or four or the same, is wasteful and inefficient. It just means that you end up paying more on your utility bills at the end of the month.

That’s why it makes far more sense to be strategic about it. The capacity of a modern washing machine can be pretty large. It’s better to take advantage of that capacity and only use the washing machine when you really utilize its capabilities closer to its maximum performance. You don’t want to keep wearing dirty clothes until it’s time to wash them, so what should you do? Laundry hampers are what you need to handle this situation.

Proper Storage

The key factor in the storage of dirty clothes that most people may not realize is health safety. Dirty clothing is full of microbes, and, if the clothes were used for athletic activities, or a family was caught out in the rain without an umbrella, the clothes may be damp or even soaked, either with sweat or water. All of this means that the clothing may actually be a breeding ground for bacteria if not stored and handled correctly.

Laundry hampers have been designed to fulfill this role, but we’re living in the 21st century now, and things have changed a lot. There’s been an evolution in laundry hampers, both in form and functionality. The one thing that hasn’t changed, however, is that they are designed to safely, conveniently store clothes until you are ready to get them washed.

Proper Placement

One of the more important choices people will be making when it comes to laundry hampers is a good place to put it. There’s only one hard and fast rule when it comes laundry hamper positioning; keep it away from your kitchen. The reason for this is simple. Food safety.

Because dirty laundry is a potential breeding ground for bacteria that adversely affect human health, the last thing you want is for that bacteria to be too close to where food is prepared. That just means that you’re now putting yourself at even more risk of contagion and contamination, since the bacteria in the clothing may, if it gets into your food, bypass all your outer defenses and go directly into your stomach, digestive system and bloodstream once you eat that contaminated food.

Instead, keep your laundry hamper in a distant, but a convenient place, such as your bedroom, or the bathroom, for people discarding clothes just before hopping into the shower.

Standing Out Safely

Laundry hampers of today are durable, versatile and, perhaps most important for modern, 21st century homeowners, they can be cool and stand out! The nearly invisible, modest hampers that people may remember growing up with from childhood are no longer the only option. Modern laundry hampers are made out of flexible, durable plastic, and can come in a variety of eye-catching designs. So people looking for patterns, fun illustrations, or even just something that’s easy to spot so children know where the clothes are supposed to go have an easier time.

The other great feature about modern, cool laundry hampers is that they are vented. This means that clothes that go in can “breathe” and dry out, preventing moisture build up. With clothes that dry out, they don’t become dark, humid piles where mold can form, thus helping to reduce the risk of contagion even more.

If you don’t yet have a cool laundry hamper for your home, consider getting one soon! Better laundry management makes things neater, easier and even healthier for everyone in a home.
