How to Surf your Soul

Finding the state of flow.

Keramas Surf Break (Bali, 2018)

The salty air tinges my senses. I can hardly hear my thoughts over the roar of the waves. Somehow, I feel peaceful inside.

“Everything’s going to be all right,” I hum to myself. Somehow, life seems much less serious.

I’m sitting on the shore of the Keramas Surf Break in Bali. It’s a tough paddle out as the waves incessantly come crashing down, forcing surfers back to the shore.

Once out at sea, then it’s all about synchronicity. Spotting the perfect wave, being in the right place at the right time and paddling hard enough to catch the wave.

It’s the place where skill and opportunity meet. The perfect spot called flow.

Flow is that exhilarating moment when you are fully immersed in the process. Time stops. Mind stops. Effortlessly, life moves through you.

I think back to my first few fumbling attempts on the surfboard, at yoga, cooking a meal or launching a business.

Clunky movements meant that wipeouts were inevitable.

Despite that, life is like riding a wave — to keep your balance you must keep moving.

Like hopping back on the surfboard after getting walloped by the waves, I’m still trying to regain my footing after losing my first business. Somehow, I’m getting better at the balance day by day.

As wave after wave crashes onto the shore, I see the infinite possibilities that abound. Some waves, we miss. Some waves, we ride. All are perfect. It is always the perfect time.

I’m suddenly brimming with new ideas. And my heart skips a beat.

For whatever we lose (like a you or a me), it’s always ourselves we find at the sea.

The Flow State

It’s nearing the end of a long holiday under the sun. I’m watching the last of the sun’s rays, as it sets in the horizon. The tide has gone out, exposing the rocky coral underneath.

Nature goes about its own rhythm, whether we like it or not. Whether we go with it, or not. There is flow in nature’s rhythms, like the heartbeat of the Universe.

In needing for things to turn out fine, having to know and be right, I had forgotten to flow. I had forgotten to let my heart beat in sync with the cosmos.

The state of flow is one of trust. In trusting life, we go with the flow.

I found that life has always supported me all along, just waiting until I woke up and remembered.

In letting things happen and trusting in the process, I made room for synchronicity. I had made the space for magic.

Creating the space for magic meant that I didn’t have to do it alone. I just needed to step back and let it play in my life.

The state of flow is one of happiness. The absolute delight in simply being.

Being — right here, right now — without the thought of what could be, should be or would’ve been. Empowering the present moment by living it fully is an utter celebration of life itself.

In choosing happiness and focusing on the most positive aspects of any experience, we merge with the flow.

It is loving life as it shows up in the present moment.

The state of flow is one of love. In loving life, we become the flow.

In the state of love, life itself begins to flow through us. We become the current that is flowing through the Universe.

Each act becomes the magic itself and ripples outward.

Each day a peak experience.

In radiating love, we receive it back — through the people we meet or the situations we encounter. We become One with the Universe.

All there is, is love.

I look at love reflected back in his eyes and I smile.

My heart skips a beat.

It’s time to surf and flow.
