G’day fellow L’Ders! I hope that you spoiled your mothers with flowers, chocolates or a slap-up meal at a Mitchelin-starred restaurant; if not a Mitchelin-starred restaurant, then maybe a Harvester if you’re saving the pennies. So now that Mothering Sunday has passed, it’s time to embrace the Irish in oneself to celebrate St. Patricks Day on this upcoming Saturday.

On today’s Midweek Drink, I shall be reviewing the non-alcoholic beer: Budweiser Budvar: B:FREE Alcohol Free Beer.

A brief history of Budweiser Budvar

Budweiser Budvar originates from České Budějovice, Czech Republic in 1265. The city was founded by King Ottoker II of Bohemia, who granted the city the right to brew beer. In 1351, the city became the leading brewery for the Holy Roman Empire, thanks to the new king of Bohemia, Charles IV, who granted a new law that would forbid any pubs to be built within a 6-mile radius from the city. This was known as ‘The Mile Right’.

Over the course of the centuries since it began, the brewery continued to grow stronger and stronger — then in 1894 it changed. The brewery was taken to court at the South New York District Court over the name ‘Budweiser’ by Adolphus Busch, the founder of the US-based beer Anheuser-Busch. After the court case, Budweiser Budvar continued to brew their beer in České Budějovice; and to this day, they are still brewing there with great success through international exports across 56 countries.

Three senses and a beverage

The ingredients used are: water from artesian wells, barley malt, hops. This non-alcoholic beer is bottled in a 330ml glass bottle with the name ‘Budwesier Budvar B: Free’ labelled at the front.

It has a clear-gold colour, light carbonation and a thick frothy head which then dissipates to a thin white band around the glass.

It has a malty and sweet taste at first, followed by a hoppy yet slightly bitter aftertaste. Very refreshing with a light body and a slight fizz to it with a sweet, bready aroma.
