Great post! I used to work with a marketer who refused to give freebies, and his explanatory catch phrase stuck with me: “You don’t pay, you don’t pay attention.” So true!

I’ll admit that in addition me earning scholarships and working part-time, my family was also generous with their help. Luckily, I’ve always been super hungry (…nerdy), loved academics, and worked hard despite not having the financial weight on my shoulders. While “paying” in sweat equity isn’t quite the same, I certainly still paid attention.

Having been raised in a tightwad home, I was shocked by how some students squandered their time and money. Their indifference to cost made me so sad for the families (and tax payers!) funding their frivolity, self-indulgence, and “self-exploration”.

I hope your ideas become more mainstream, or at least infiltrate the conversation! With college costs rising and value falling, we can’t afford NOT to talk about it.
