How Much Is Enough?
“Ah, you’re the 2nd in class now. You didn’t study hard enough, did you?”
“Your movements aren’t fluid and graceful enough.”
“That’s still over thirty seconds. Your pace isn’t fast enough.”
“Why do you go to school here? You’re not smart enough to go to school in the big city, are you?
“I don’t think your GPA is high enough.”
Don’t you think sometimes you’ve had enough of hearing the word ‘enough’? Well, the word ‘enough’ doesn’t necessarily have a bad meaning, but society has been using that word too much that now it’s associated with bad things. These days, what comes before or after that word is not something that makes us feel good. It usually leaves us with feelings like sadness, despair, and disappointment; feelings that we directed to ourselves.
We’ve listened to the word ‘enough’ too much — way too much, I suppose. People have been directing that word to you too much that sometimes you’ve started criticizing yourself with that word too. It’s not a good thing to do, especially when you’re aware that you are your worst critic. But when people have been doing it to you for so long, then you become used to it, right?
Well, wrong. The word ‘enough’ doesn’t seem like something that you can get used to. It feels like the word has the ‘bottomless pit’ effect —at least that’s how it is to me. Hearing it once is already too much, but it can never end there until we’re left wondering how much enough is actually enough to be said.
