Gigi Laurin, 20, observes Piedmont Avenue from above in Berkeley, CA., on Thursday, June 2, 2022. (Lily Candy/Journ 110)

Above is my favorite portrait of my good friend and incredible writer, Gigi Laurin. I initially aimed to capture more of Gigi’s outgoing characteristics but I found this photo best conveys her professionalism as a journalist for the Daily Cal. Now an editor, Gigi searches for stories throughout Berkeley and helps share them. With the Campanile indirectly visible, yet still distinguishable, Gigi’s influence with not only journalist culture but UC Berkeley culture as well is perfectly emphasized.

As for honorable mentions, I had plenty! It was so fun to shoot with Gigi, and we worked together to discover new poses and directions of light to play with. In general, I aimed to combine the sun’s warmth and Gigi’s creative personality.

Above is my postcard introduction, filmed with my iPhone and a very make-shift filming space. With my tripod and mic battery still on their way in the mail, this is what I had to work with this evening! I used a chair with my laptop as a tripod, and my iPad as a lighting mechanic. I thought it would be funny to attach what this looked like…
