Week 5 — Analysis of emotional words in articles (Movement in Mong Kok)
Here are two news articles with opposite views.
(In this article, it focuses on the fear on the a lost identity in Hong Kong younger generation. They are striving for democracy and a better community.)
Emotional word: Illusion
Evaluation: negative(-8). It means something is a mistaken conception and is unreal. It sounds like there had been no peaceful protest in Hong Kong.
Potency: quite strong(+8). We can find many weaker words like confusion/dream/misconception. But no stronger words can replace “illusion”.
Activity: Passive(-8). Illusion is simply a image being viewed by audience.
Emotional word: shattered
Evaluation: negative(-10). It means something is destroyed or broken into pieces violently. It sounds like peace cannot be restored in Hong Kong anymore.
Potency: Very strong (+9). Hard to think of any even stronger words. There are many weaker words like broken/cracked/damaged etc.
Activity: Active(+8). It sounds like the protesters are the one who damaged the peaceful order.
2. A Fishball Revolution and Umbrella Soldiers: The Battle for Hong Kong’s Soul
(This article is about the worries that, with the precedent of Fishball Revolution, people in the future will be even more radical. They might use “civil disobedience” to mask their true violent nature of their actions.)
Emotional word: Battle
Evaluation: Postive(+8). It can be a neutral word but as it is linked to the the word “soul”, it creates a image that people are pursuing something great in the battle. People are doing good for the future.
Potency: Strong(+10). Weaker word include fight/quarrel/work etc. Similar word can be “war” but there are no stronger words.
Activity: Active(+10). People start the battle themselves so they are in actively participating in the battle for “glory”.
Emotional word: Soul
Evaluation: Positive(+10). It is something about spirit and quality of every human being.
Potency: Quite strong (+6). But still, there can be stronger words like ego/conscience/heart etc.
Activity: Passive (-8). Soul are possessed by people but are not achieved.
