A poem

I held your hand

the first time when we met at that highschool dance

and you walked me home for the first time

I held your hand

so many times that first year

until you left and life interrupted

I held your hand

thirty-eight years later when love visited again

at the perfect time

I held your hand

so many times in our new life together

too many to count

I held your hand

just before they wheeled you away

and into the ambulance

I held your hand

yesterday while I sat with you

in the hospital — four hours, that’s all the time we had

I long to hold your hand again
