Why I Still Read My Local Newspaper Daily
Even though it’s a shadow of its former self
It’s 9:28 am on Sunday morning and I’m still waiting for the delivery of my local paper. My newspaper delivery is prompt on weekdays, but on Sundays it’s more erratic coming anytime between 7 to 10 am or not at all.
I wonder about the story behind that, but I’m taking it in stride. I can always read it online, but the experience is just not the same.
Why do I still get a printed newspaper?
I like the feeling of the newspaper in my hands as I read it every morning. It’s my daily ritual like my morning cup of coffee. My husband makes sure it’s sitting on the breakfast table waiting for me each day.
I like to keep in touch with local area news (although there’s much less of it nowadays). It’s also a connection to my local community and I believe strongly in the importance of a free press.
I grew up with a mom who loved to read newspapers and she instilled this practice in me at a young age. She subscribed to our local Atlantic City Press newspaper and the Philadelphia Inquirer, from her hometown where she grew up.
