Sunken Titanic Video Footage Released

This week’s big science reveal is the release of 80 minutes of video footage featuring the sunken Titanic, taken shortly after it was discovered in 1985 during an expedition led by oceanographer and scientist Robert Ballard.

I had the opportunity to meet and chat with Ballard a few years ago when he was making a personal appearance at a college (see my photo above). He is highly intelligent yet conversational; personable and very open to answering questions about his many dangerous explorations.

Ballard and his Navy crew were conducting secret military missions to find other prominent shipwrecks when they received permission to also search for the Titanic. The world’s largest and “safest” ship sank in the early morning hours of April 15, 1912 after colliding with an iceberg.
