When Childbirth Feels like Assault
Family Resemblance

When I had our son in 1987 my husband and I attended pre-birth group sessions that were so helpful in preparing for the event. In one session I recall the instructor telling us not to be afraid to stand up for our rights. She said that physicians will try to get you to take some medication that would speed up the evacuation of the placenta. This did indeed happen and I remember being so proud of my empowerment to say to the Doctor.”Can’t you just wait for it to come out naturally?” It did within minutes and to this day I still feel proud of my “audacity” to speak up for myself!
