Pre Release Comments on Driving in Reverse — The Life I Almost Missed

DRIVING IN REVERSE — THE LIFE I ALMOST MISSED
Lindsay WINCHERAUK
Still reading…your story is intense, to say the least, and packed with surprises and gems…sui generis…
THE STARS IN THE SKY
WHAT THE PRE RELEASE READERS ARE SAYING
This morning I read through the book material you sent me with great interest. Your memoir approach is wild and original
Your writing reminds me of Kafka, John Barth, Jorge Borges; and Alcott; plus others. Reading your story reminds me of “Lost in the Funhouse” and other experimental nonlinear stories in the anti-novel genre. Wild ride! I see genuine literary merit in your ‘memoir.’ This book has great potential in my view.
Still in the midst of reading your book…finding it provocative and playful, edgy…disturbing, disruptive…among other adjectives to convey my impressions
Your story is extraordinary and the message is powerful. The way you write about your experience is wildly original!
This aspect of your narrative is very important and really helps to show off your signature style, talent and versatility — not only as a writer/journalist but an artist (graphic designer, photographer). It also makes the reading experience fun, with opportunities to pause, have a laugh, and reconnect with the story again.
I see you as a mix-master or DJ selecting different life tracks, in clips, sound bites, jazz riffs, refrains (memories of spoken words, phrases) to broadcast on your show. You play with this idiom a lot in your book and directly reference it: ending with PLAY.

Wildly imaginative, taking flights of fantasy and spinning off straight storytelling into surreal and sometimes macabre scenes. “Beelzebub stopped at a Starbucks…” That gets the reader’s attention & keeps them “wanting more.”
Compassionate, self aware, humble, and grateful — increases toward end of story. These moments in the story strike me as sincere with no ambiguity or irony intended.
You’ve brought in a wild array of real-life characters to represent the story of your life: bar characters, friends, family, co-workers, divine messengers. The way you paint a picture of these characters for the reader is through their words (in dialogue and letters), and actions — not by psychoanalyzing them. That’s one of the strengths of this book. You reserve self-study for showing your own personal transformation.
The content of your story is powerful and compelling
