Universal Design for Learning
Hello everyone! In my previous post I briefly mentioned the concept of Universal Design for Learning. I decided to create a post highlighting and describing this practice to show you why UDL is my number one platform. Together, we can bridge the gap between all types of learners!

There are 3 guiding principles of universal design for learning which are:
- Representation: This refers to presenting informations to students in a variety of formats so that all learners may have access to the information. (Dr. De Arment, VCU). This principle benefits all learners through the use of multiple formats which allows the educator to reach all types of learners whether they be kinesthetic, tactile, auditory, or visual.
- Action & Expression: This component gives students the ability to express their understanding of content in a variety of methods best suited to their individual learning styles. This again benefits all types of learners and provides the class the ability to practice while the teacher can use scaffolding support. This method allows students the creative ability to show learning in a variety of ways while receiving corrective feedback from the educator and peers. (Dr. De Arment, VCU).
- Engagement: The third principle allows the educator the ability to engage the class in a variety of ways. The instructor can offer choices, allow options in the learning environment, and create an overall flexible experience. (Dr. De Arment, VCU).
No two students are the same. Children vary drastically based on interests, learning styles, methods of expression, culture, and in many more areas. Universal Design for Learning allows educators the ability to reach, engage, and educate every student through flexibility and encouragement. Along with art integration into core curriculum, every student can have an equal and powerful voice.
