This is what it truly means to be authentic

Why do we try so hard to look like, sound like, or actually be someone else?

We often tend to focus too much on how other people view us or what their opinions of us are to the point where we eventually try to change who we are all together. Maybe it’s because we are insecure or afraid or ashamed.

But in some cases, the reason being is because we actually don’t know who we are — We are trying to navigate the path to understanding ourselves and accepting that person. And sometimes, we may not be comfortable with finding out who that person is.

The thing is, if you don’t know who you are, then you can’t be yourself. And if you’re not being yourself, then you are inevitably going to try to be someone else.

adjective au·then·tic \ ə-ˈthen-tik , ȯ- \Authentic

:true to one’s own personality, spirit, or character

is sincere and authentic with no pretensions

People can always tell when you are being insincere or artificial. When that happens, you will not be well-received and may even be dismissed completely. What people really want to see is real authenticity and the key to authenticity is knowing who you are first.

In order to do so, you must find your own voice, your own style, your own path. You must narrow down what you love versus what you don’t. You must think for yourself, educate yourself, and embrace yourself. Once you do that, be confident in your voice, your style, your path.

So, go. Be who you are meant to be. As Shakespeare once wrote,

“To thine own self be true”
