The number of English-language learners in U.S. schools has been steadily rising over recent decades. As of fall 2016, almost ten percent of America’s students are ELLs — almost an increase of a million students since 2000. To address these rising numbers, it is critical that schools are able to allot sufficient resources that will assist students and their teachers navigate language barriers in the classroom. In particular, teachers must be prepared to handle the vast diversity of languages that are entering their classrooms. Nothing short of the success of these students is at stake.
