Michael Wolf is a German photographer and writer. In 1994, young Michael came to Hong Kong, set up his tripod, and began his creative journey. As a result of reform and opening up, China was experiencing rapid urbanization, a phenomenon that became one of the central elements of Michael’s work.

Michael Wolf’s “Architecture of Destiny” series focuses the photographic lens on the forest-like urban architecture of Hong Kong. Hong Kong is one of the densest and most populated cities in the world, with the highest verticality of buildings. In order to compensate for the lack of horizontal space, the only way is to extend the urban space to the clouds.

This series of works vividly demonstrates the extent to which skyscrapers are densely stacked in this city. The scenes of the city’s high-rise forests are highlighted through formal repetitions in the images, triggering a multi-layered visual resonance. These works not only present the rapidly expanding urban layout of Hong Kong but also map out the current living conditions of the city’s residents.

Architecture of Destiny" shows typical German photography, in which a calm, objective, precise, and rigorous photographic style is present throughout. The photographs reflect the infinite expansion and continuous development of cities, a theme that gives the works a profound aesthetic effect and presents a unique and fascinating aesthetic.

Michael Wolf’s way of gazing at the city through photography has had an influence on the way I have approached my project this semester. His dispassionate observational approach to documenting urban landscapes was reflected during my project. I learned to take a closer look at my photographs to uncover the details of the city that are often overlooked but continue to influence our lives. This process has not only inspired new photographic thinking but has also given me a deeper understanding of the nature of cities.
