Street artist SyP has been working in urban spaces since the 1980s in a funny and thought-provoking way. Deftly utilising a variety of objects and materials found in public spaces, he has cleverly hidden his installations in various corners of the city, with each piece becoming a miniature symbol of a particular irony.

In the work, SpY installed 150 replica surveillance cameras on a wall in Madrid, pointing them uniformly in the same direction. These symbolic cameras provoke various reactions from pedestrians. The work mocks the over-surveillance by the authorities, and through this humorous intervention, SpY hopes to raise awareness of some of the realities of the situation.

SpY cleverly uses a blank wall and a large number of cameras to create a strong visual impact on the viewer. This creative approach has deeply inspired me to rethink the possibilities of the work’s presentation. Strong visuals are a powerful medium to arouse the viewer’s curiosity and provoke observation and reflection, thus enabling the viewer to understand and appreciate the artist’s creative intent more deeply.
