The problem with Ian’s assumption that only the party who controls the Senate will choose the next Supreme Court Justice is the fact that one of the political parties in question is called the Democratic Party. They will defer to the old norms the first chance they get. They will always want to please the Republicans, no matter what. There has been absolutely no indication to date that they would behave otherwise, so I am confused as to why the author believes that things will change — they will not. The Republicans will always have their ultra-right wing-nut nominee, and the Democrats will always choose a right-of-center compromise.
