A wise woman once said that if someone is depressed they should go out and help someone or volunteer. I thought it was crazy. If I’m depressed and can’t deal with my own life, why would helping someone with theirs make a difference? But it does. Once I took the focus off of myself I felt better. Also, helping others made me more conscious of all of the good things I had in my life to be grateful for. It made a huge difference in my life. I know that depression can make life feel like sludge and it’s difficult to do anything. Trust me, it’s worth the effort to do this. Giving, helping or volunteering has the “magical” effect of diluting that sludge and everything becomes easier.
