We’ve known this.
The train wreck fascination is the public discourse. We did not know that our neighbors could excuse open racism and misogyny. We can’t fathom that they would ignore well-documented facts. Prior to this election, we caught a few whiffs of it, but we stare in horror at the magnitude of ugliness.
We keep searching for the one thing that will bring people to their sensibilities. We never knew the depths of hate in our neighbors, our families. We are assessing the extent of the problem and wondering what to do about it.
