John Metta, well written and poinient. I see the unintended complicity of individuals, however, what are we to do? I always argue the fact that the African American community at large are less advantaged and have lesser quality of education, etc. I always argue the fact that the youth of your community are more harshly punished for small things that are shugged off and chuckled at if a white youth is the perpetrator. I grew up and live in an almost exclusively white community, where people discriminated if you were Italian, Irish, Hungarian, etc. But the white community can’t readily ‘see’ if you are these. I’ve been called a ‘N lover’ when defending the plight of African Americans. I laugh and say, what about what I’m pointing out is untrue. They come back with what do care? I say I’m a human being, I care about all humanity. The conversation ends. How can I, as a ‘glow-in-the -dark’ white person help, except to help explain what I perceive as your mindset and your disadvantages that have kept you there as a whole? I would love to see equity, it enriches us all as a civilization.
