Oh man. As a never-married, no kiddos woman who just turned 50, people ALWAYS assume that I have kids. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked the “do you have kids” question, I’d be retired. When I was younger (say, 30’s and early 40's), it was difficult to find female friends, because I didn’t have anything to contribute to the dominate conversations of the day (what little Jimmy and Janie did today, or my schedule of devotion to them).

Now that I’m more mature (just turned 50) and engaged for the first time, people actually ask me when we’re going to have kids. I laugh incredulously and shake my head every time. WHAT?!?! As if I’ve been pining away my whole life to get married so I could have kids. So....weird. If I’d wanted kids, I would have just had them, regardless of my man status. But its just never been a tug for me. I don’t dislike kids, just never saw being a Mom as my life’s purpose.

With my fiance and I both in our 50’s, never married, and no kids, we’re definitely an anomaly in a non-urban culture. But we absolutely love our childless/childfree lives!

Thanks for this post. Its nice to know others are/have been there!
