Kind of shocked the dull, unintelligent and typical comments on this.
Basic income = What a citizen would get every single month whether they worked or not. His 1k is his basic income, what he earns on top of that is a bonus.
It would more than likely encourage some people to actually work more, to top up their income, to live a better life and contribute to the community.
Yes, if it existed their would be people who spend theirs on drugs or crime related activities, but many would live a better life, want to be a better person. Someone working minimum wage instead of living pay to pay would be able to have some money for those sudden emergencies or to save for a deposit on a better rental.
I guess its like Australia, we have paid 18 week maternity leave, paid by our government and tax breaks for families but it doesn’t mean mums just give up working, it is just a helping hand to make them and their children better members of society (most of the time) any additional maternity leave is a bonus from their employer. But that is a basic income of sorts for a period of time, if you have an online business or can work from home you then make money on top of that.
Basic income makes sense to me, of course there should be a cap for people who obviously earn well and truly enough eg. In Australia I personally would base it on the average salary. Thus anyone over $81k would not receive the basic income.
With some of the comments it appears people do not want to pay more taxes to help better their country, their people and the economy of their country. But the old google machine enlightened me to the fact that America has quite low taxes compared to other thriving countries…….
