Ian… (I’m trying not to laugh):
You said that America was the “first in the Modern Era” to abolish slavery when in fact, the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom that was passed on 25 March 1807, with the title of “An Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade”. In 1833 Parliament passed a further act to abolish slavery in the British West Indies, Canada and the Cape of Good Hope (southern Africa), meaning that it was now illegal to buy or own a person. However, slavery continued in other areas of the British Empire including the territories run by the East India Company, Ceylon (modern day Sri Lanka) and St Helena.
The United States was approx. between 30 — 60 years old and just getting things, how do you say… “rolling” as far as owning property aka slave labor was concerned.
