How Could Everything Be The Same

When it’s all different

There was nothing different, but everything had changed
There you were, your smile as big and bright as ever
Beautiful for everyone to see, and ever, ever so clever

You stood up to hug me, smiled my name
Sat down across from me, like we had no end
Carried on chatting, like we were old friends

Which of course we are, from far, long ago
So nothing unusual, about this usual scene
But yet there it was, not hidden but unseen

Neither one said it, there was no need
The truth was right there, didn’t need to be spoken
It was worn our our sleeves, a little heartbroken

The conversation continued, but my heart couldn’t hear
You were here, I was here
But you didn’t want more, than just a half-flat beer?

I could just reach out, and hold your hand
Feel your touch, and your skin so soft
Just like it was, like we never lost

Where did it go, where is it now?
Why is your hand, so near so far
When I could reach out, reach out with my heart

And take it in mine, pull you close across space and time
Back to the way it was, the way it should be
Back to our love, just you and just me.
