The wonderful gift of speech,
Helps us teach,
Helps us preach,
It helps us beseech.

Helps us understand,
Helps us withstand,
Helps us communicate,
It helps us to placate.

Helps us to mediate arguments,
Helps us to buff out emotional dents,
Helps us express ourselves,
It helps us clean goodness’ dusty shelves.

Helps us make wonder,
Rejoin friends gone asunder,
But what do we use it for,
“For the greater good!” are you sure?

Our language is foul,
With the makings of that of a ghoul,
We eat away a person’s delight,
We use it to induce fright.

We use it to start wars,
Channelling our inner conquistador,
We use it to spark arguments,
In joy’s hood, we make dents.

We laugh in glee,
As we unleash anger in a spree,
Out pours of insults, a tirade,
Words like a sharpened blade.

We misuse our tongue,
Hate pours out of our lung,
Sweetness and kindness, are now out of reach.
Where have you gone?…
…The wonderful gift of speech!
