This week I said goodbye to an inspirational leader. They made me think about what it means to be a truly impactful leader and spoke to what it means to them.

The value of a person's character isn't solely based on their words or ability to give a noteworthy speech. It's their actions that truly reveal who they are and where they come from. Every decision a person makes is rooted in various aspects of their being, whether it be a well-considered thought or a spontaneous impulse. As one ascends in a community, their true nature becomes more visible to others.

As a leader, you are revealed to the world when making decisions and it will show where you are grounded and what you truly value.

With this particular person, you could tell that their intentions were grounded in a drive to help others and grow the people around them. They always approached problems framed around how to help people and how it will affect them. People under them never had to question whether they were making a decision out of pure selfishness or to climb the ranks, and yet they were one of the most influential people we have ever had in our organization.

So what did they finally reveal his core values to be that helped make him so effective? They put it:

“I strive to be a manager who is 3 things: humble, approachable, and credible”
