World no. 2 Andy Murray and his wife Kim Sears have welcomed their first child — a baby girl — into the world, it was announced on Tuesday morning.

According to the BBC, the baby is said to have been born on Sunday night.

Murray was open in the run-up to the birth about prioritizing his family and was prepared to withdraw from the Australian Open should Kim go into premature labour.

‘My child is more important to me, and my wife is more important to me, than a tennis match,’ Murray said.

‘It’s a big change for me and my wife, but that’s the current priority and I’ll see after that. I have no idea how that will change things. I still love tennis.’

In the event, that wasn’t necessary but it was still a stressful two weeks for Murray off the court as his father-in-law Nigel Sears, coach of Ana Ivanovic, collapsed mid-match and had to be hospitalized before being flown home. Murray, who reached the final of the Australian Open before losing to Novak Djokovic in straight sets, concluded his runner’s-up speech with an emotional address to his wife, saying: ‘You’ve been a legend. I’ll be on the next flight home.’

Murray did indeed race home from Melbourne and it seems that the baby was born a week after the Australian Open final.

Murray joins Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka as active fathers in the top 10 — Federer has two sets of twins, Myla and Charlene and Leo and Lenny, while Djokovic welcomed his son Stefan in the autumn of 2014. Wawrinka has a daughter, Alexia, born in 2010.

Murray and Kim have been in a relationship for about 11 years and married in April 2014 in Dunblane, Murray’s home town.

Murray is not scheduled to play any tennis events until the Indian Wells Masters, which begins on 7 March.
