In the spirit of #MarchMeetTheMaker I thought I’d introduce myself as the maker of LiveToEatLocal .

Hello!

My name is Lucy and I live in Royston, which is almost exactly between Cambridge and Hitchin which is why Live to Eat Local doesn’t just focus on one town. I’m lucky enough to be able to jump on the train or get in the car and easily get to both of these places and all the lovely villages surrounding them. We moved here just under three years ago from London and part of the reason I created Live To Eat Local was to get to know my local food world.

I am a Mum of two children my daughter is six and my son is three. They are amazing and can make me laugh like no one else but they are both erm…. ‘spirited’, so life is busy! I’m married to a South African man, who is pretty much British now as he’s been here so long, although he desperately misses the sun (who can blame him.. so do I and I didn’t even grow up with it)

Work That Works

Before children I worked in Marketing, initially in agencies and then for media companies including the Discovery Channel and Time Inc. Since my children were born I have done a bit of freelance work but soon discovered the very real struggle of parents, especially Mothers, trying to work and be a parent. We had the usual issues of lack of affordable childcare and lack of flexibility in my husband’s job. The crunch came when I was offered a part time position (a rare, rare opportunity) in my old company and, to make a long story short, I found myself seriously considering the option of taking my then five year old into London for a holiday club during the school holidays — the prospect of making my five year commute clarified that I would have to come up with a different solution!

After a lot of thinking and research I decided to enrol with London based company Digital Mums and do a six month Social Media Management Course. The course is aimed at mothers who are looking for #workthatworks around family life, it complemented and updated my skills from my previous career in and I loved the idea of having a specialism.

Live To Eat Local Was Born

So this is how Live To Eat Local came about, as well as written lessons, reports and webinars the main premise of the course is learning by doing. So I created a social media campaign around a subject I’m passionate about… food.

I Love Food!

I’ve loved food and cooking ever since I can remember, I’m slightly impatient and love killing two birds with one stone..and in my opinion loving what you eat is just that.. you have to eat, it’s a massive part of life .. may as well make it good food. With Live to Eat Local I could track down great food and drink in the area and share what I find.

What Next ?

I have finished my course now, it was very comprehensive (hard work!) and I feel confident and ready to begin my career as a Social Media Manager and am hoping to be able to work with some of the amazing independent businesses that I have come across since starting my campaign.

Live To Eat Local has become so much more than a project for my course, I have made great connections with great people and genuinely feel more aware and part of my local community. I’ve loved finding out about all the interesting independent businesses in the area, the passion and dedication that small business owners have is fantastic to be around and I definitely want more of it in my life!

And of course I have discovered truly delicious food and drink!

So Live to Eat Local will still carry on sharing great food finds and information but maybe at a slower pace over the next few weeks while recover from a pretty intensive 6 months!
