Always rooting for you

It’s my go-to phrase. It’s a short, four-letter phrase that isn’t even grammatically correct. My friends think it’s funny but have come to understand why I use it. For me, it essentially means that I will always be on someone’s side. But why not use support and be like “I will be here for you?”. Needless to say, I was looking for something that had my voice inserted into it and was uniquely me.

AP Lit taught me to break down phrases, understand what they mean, why they’re used, and connect them back to the main point. This is what it truly means when I say “Always rooting for you”.

Always

When you add modifiers like always, it changes many things. Always is like a constant. For me, it’s a reminder that I will be there to see people flourish or reach “eudaimonia” (human flourishing and happiness).

It’s different from saying just rooting for you because it doesn’t show that I’ll always be doing it. It shows that it won’t be something that is a constant.

The word always establishes that constant. I won’t be just rooting once. I’ll do it again. And for you? Over and over.

rooting

Hold tight! This gets a little too analytical.

When you root for someone, it’s different from support. When I think of rooting for someone, it means I’m cheering them on and being confident in their abilities. Supporting is more being in favor or being there for someone.I cheer people on from the sides and fully believe in their abilities to achieve what they want to achieve. I’m on your side! You got this!

Also, when I think of roots, I think plant roots.

Roots grow. They are beneath the soil. It serves as a metaphor that even though it’s trapped, it still grows and becomes a beautiful plant or tree. For me, the roots symbolize adversity. You can get through what traps you. You will also grow into leaders of tomorrow. World shakers. Game changers. People of impact. People of tomorrow.

When I put it together, I use rooting to show someone that I am not only cheering for them, but I believe in them and they can overcome adversity, and that this is a foundation for them.

for

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. It’s directing what I am doing.

you

This is to my audience. This is who I am doing it for. Whatever I do, I do it for you. I may not know you yet, but I will do it for you.

This phrase, it not without its meaning. There’s a reason it’s my signature.
