Moishe House + JDC Entwine Collaboration

  • Arielle Sokoloff and Paige Bookoff became MHWOW hosts themselves after attending Moishe House’s first ever MHWOW exclusive retreat, Elevate!
Arielle is in the second row, 4th from the left, and Paige is in the front row in the center!

Jude Cohen attended the Moishe House Revisioning Shabbat retreat in Vienna, Austria, and reflected that Moishe House chose strong participants to create an intentional space. She enjoyed being a participant in a Jewish space, instead of constantly leading, and expressed that she has been able to connect resources from the retreat to her personal MHWOW programs, like the Paideia cards, and curriculum she created for her madrichim.

Jude and her roommate Samantha, another Jewish Service Corp fellow, often attend events at Moishe House Budapest and have become close friends with the residents.

2017 Program Highlights

Jake Berger — Schmooze in the Sukkah (Helsinki)

“Finland’s first Moishe House Without Walls event! A gathering in the Helsinki Jewish Community’s Sukkah for young adults and international students in the city. A chilled-hang out with some homemade mulled wine and similarly warm company, all whilst fulfilling the mitzvah of leshev b’sukkah.”

Sydney Switzer — Shabbat Dinner (Mumbai)

“Shabbat dinner for young Jewish adults in Mumbai. Will have short prayer service, Shabbat traditions, and social time. I also hope to teach a few songs.”

Jude Cohen — December Rosh Chodesh Brunch (Budapest)

“We will host a small group of women for a beginning of the month brunch; though it is taking place at the beginning of a secular month, we will use it as an opportunity to discuss the origins of Rosh Chodesh and different traditions of observance, especially since it is regarded by many as a ‘women’s holiday.’”

Shira Chandler — Hanukkah Candle Lighting (Jerusalem)

“Host friends for a night of Hanukkah celebration and learning! We will all light candles together and I will teach the blessings for those individuals that do not know it. I am also going to print out a few traditional Hanukkah songs to sing. We can tell the story of Hanukkah and then play some Hanukkah games with dreidels and gelt. I will also have different crafts so people can make their crafts while we eat jelly donuts.”

Looking ahead in 2018

In 2018, we are moving toward have 80% of the cohort hosting at least 1 MHWOW program with 60% of the cohort hosting at least 4 or more programs.

Four Focuses:

  1. Consistent programming from our 2017 active hosts
  2. Encourage the 3 onboarded fellows (applied & had phone call) to host their first program in Q1
  3. Encourage the 5 fellows who have applied but have not completed their onboarding call to host first program in Q1 or Q2
  4. Encourage remaining 5 fellows to apply, complete onboarding, and host first program in Q1 or Q2
