Nestled down in the Cascade Mountains, Southern Oregon has some of the most insta-worthy wilderness areas I’ve ever seen. Here is a list of my favorite places that are perfect to spice up your ‘gram.

East Applegate Ridge

On the outskirts of Jacksonville, this amazing trail overlooks the Applegate Valley in all its beauty. Early morning or sunset hikes are recommended as there is little shade on this ridgeline.

Grizzly Peak

Located up Indian Memorial Rd south of Ashland, this mountain hike has epic views the whole way up. In the ascent, you will see Mt. McLaughlin to the east peaking through the trees. Once you get to the top you can see the prominent peak of Mt. Shasta, the crown jewel of Northern California.

Willow Lake

This tiny lake is found just outside of Butte Falls, a small logging town in Eastern Jackson Co. This lake has the most gorgeous views of Mt. McLaughlin and is perfect for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and fishing.

Mill Creek and Bar Creek Falls

Just outside of the town of Prospect in Northern Jackson County this short hike features 2 long, cascading waterfalls that flow into the Rogue River.

Samuel Boardman State Park

A list of the most insta-worthy places in Southern Oregon would not be complete without a feature of one of the Oregon Coasts' most beautiful State Parks: Samuel Boardman State Park. Located just north of the town of Brookings, it has some of the most beautiful trails and beaches in the whole state.

National Creek Falls

If you're looking for an adventure this waterfall has it all. Located off Hwy 230 on Forest Service Rd6530, just to the northwest of Crater Lake. You will explore old logging roads, walkdown a switchback trail in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and find the most adorable waterfall with many viewpoints from the top to bottom.

Lake Selmac

This lake has many access points and is located on Lakeshore Drive in the small town of Selma in Southern Josephine Co. This lake is great for picnics and fishing.

Applegate Lake

One of the southernmost lakes in Oregon, Applegate Lake is created by the damming of the Applegate River that flows through Jackson and Josephine Counties into the Rogue River. Views of the snowcapped Siskiyou Mountains make an excellent backdrop for your viewing pleasure.

Diamond Lake

This lake, surrounded by the beautiful Mt. Theilsen and Mt. Bailey features a resort and campgrounds. There are so many activities to do including hiking, horseback riding, and boating. It is best to go early summer or fall to avoid swarms of mosquitoes.

Crater Lake

Of course, this list wouldn't be complete without showcasing Oregon’s only National Park. Crater Lake is the deepest Lake in the United States and was created by the explosion of Mt. Mazama. The deep waters of this lake are the clearest, bluest water that you will ever see.
