Cynthia, I also watched and squirmed at and loved the series. What I noticed about the male you mentioned, who clings tighter to his anti-immigrant judgments even as situations seem to be about to crack his heart open, is that he refuses to feel guilty. He seems to take the whole experience as an attempt to make him feel personally responsible for the suffering of the people he meets, and every time he seems to be starting to feel, he goes back to his refusal to feel guilty. Which, it seems to me, misses the point…. Compassion is much more useful than guilt, but he’s rejecting both.
