Insecure 2.06 — Power
*Spoilers below for Insecure 2.06 — Hella Blows*
This most recent episode of Insecure is all about power. Issa struggles with power in her relationships with Nico, Eddie, and Daniel; Molly has to figure out who has control in her romance with Dro; and Lawrence realizes that he is not being treated the same as others at work.
Issa’s dick rotation has run dry. She pushed Daniel away last week by reminding him that she is seeing other people, so he was not that keen to hang out with her this week. She and Eddie are done after she drops by unannounced and he’s being “helped with a lot of stuff” by a girl from his class. And, she freaks Nico out by trying to rush into sex, when the dude is 46 and clearly just wants to take her to dinner once before sleeping with her. Plus, her car is wrecked and she’s broke. At the moment, she’s powerless. She was beginning to gain confidence from the multiple men she had interested in her and now she’s slowly sinking back to her original place.
On the other hand, Molly was trying to take the power back in her relationship with Dro. She was weirded out that they slept together and she was going to end it for the sake of their friendship. She wanted to go back to being homies, but it’s clear Dro had a different idea…and he won. Dro holds all of the power in their relationship, especially because he can leave at the drop of a hat (or a buzz of the cell phone, which is the more modern version of that phrase I’m thinking) to go tend to his actual wife. It’s obvious this situation is not appealing to Molly because she’s a woman who deserves to be in power and it really puts her in a vulnerable spot. I think Candace and Molly are about to collide soon and I’m looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Will they fight each other for Dro’s attention? Or will they band together and both leave him (though, I don’t know why they would, yet, I’m sure something will come up).
At Lawrence’s startup, he finally presents the app he has been working on since we meet him in season one. This app was what put him on the couch and definitely acted as part of the catalyst for Issa cheating on him. It obviously meant a great deal to him and at the end of the presentation, the only thing the two founders of his company could say was, “where did you get those shoes”. It seems like they were afraid of offending the only black guy in the company because they “value his perspective.” While Lawrence was able to find some solace talking to Aparna, who had a similar experience because she’s a woman, I wonder how he’s going to come out of this one. Hopefully, he can revitalize “Woot Woot” or combine it with Aparna’s “DriveBy” app so that he can find success at work and teach his awkward startup founders that there is more to him than just the “black perspective.”
The episode finishes off with the girls exploring the Sexplosion event to which (of course) Kelli invites them all. After a looooong conversation about blowjobs and power (thanks for spoonfeeding me the theme for this post), we cut between Molly & Issa with their respective men. I spoke above about what happened to Molly, but Issa and Daniel seem like they’re getting pretty couple-y. He remembers her favorite drink and the two of them start getting it on on the couch. Issa has had some time to marinate on Tiffany’s blowjob theory: you control a man through his penis and blowjobs allow to control his penis. With that knowledge, plus the information I’m sure they learned in the blowjob class, Issa seems ready to break her no-BJ rule. Daniel is loving it and, as it happens when guys love something, he finishes…onto her face and into her eye. Issa freaks out on Daniel (hell hath no fury like a woman with cum in her eye) and runs out.
I don’t think her anger really stemmed from the pain in her eye, though. I think Issa was upset because she was putting herself in a vulnerable position in order to hopefully gain power in the relationship, but she still ended up in a sticky situation (get it?!). She was trying to regain her confidence, but in the end, the man won out again. Not texting her back, not sleeping with her, having another girl over, and cumming in her eye are all roots from the same tree. They are all telling her: you are not powerful. It’s time for Issa to stand up for herself, stop messing around with all of these shitty guys, and tell the racist vice principal to go fuck himself (yeah, I didn’t forget about him). I’m hoping this is her turning point and we’re going to see more black lipstick Issa and less pink.
