Shit non-mathematicians say about maths

I was always good at math, but came to really value mathematics as a language through my love of science. I have been terribly disappointed to see mathematics instruction become reduced to what I like to describe as “cook book” math. Here’s a problem…here are the steps you must go through to solve… It’s no wonder that so many kids dislike math! I am so excited about STEM education because if it is done right, we can provide context for rich problems and deep mathematical understanding. Again, as with the “cook book” math, the problem is that so many educators under tremendous pressure for test results go for a short cut. In the process, they cut out essential components of the thinking process that necessary for learning experiences to be rich and meaningful.
