I had to cringe at my workplace “Cinco de Mayo Fiesta”. The (very white) organizers were all wearing sombreros and fake mustaches. How do you tell people that are senior to you in your organization that their “costumes” are racist? At least they bought the food and treats from the local hispanic community.
To me, the “Cinco de Drinko” bit is the bastardization that we anglos make of the holiday — tacos and tequila. It isn’t Cinco de Mayo. The Dia de los Muertos addition is just crazy.
Non-Mexican people treat it like a different culture’s version of St Patricks day — but with tacos and tequila instead of corned beef and Irish whiskey. After all, St Patrick’s day doesn’t bring up all the NINA (no Irish need apply) signs and other crap that the early Irish immigrants went through. Mainstreaming, yaay?
The food was good, the margaritas were strong, and the party was racist. I suppose two out of three is par for the course.
