About twenty years ago I was looking for a new apartment in Columbus Ohio, and the number of apartments I encountered which had been designed with no safety factors in mind was dreadful, and troubling.

I visited one apartment complex, it was all one level, which was laid out in such a way, (with lots opaque, waist high bannisters, covered walkways, and nooks, set inside an enclosed courtyard) that I didn’t feel safe going into the apartment to look at it. My spidey -sense was tingling so badly, that I just ran away. And this was during the day!

The thought of trying to get into the apartment at night, while standing in an enclosed courtyard, trying to open my door, with my back to all of that was kinda horrifying. It was very obviously designed by a group of men who thought themselves quite clever. There was nary a thought that women might not feel safe in such an environment. There would’ve been no way to feel safe there.
