I try not to get too worked up about horror films being no good, because it has always been that way, since the invention of the horror film, I think. Every decade, hundreds of horror movies are released to the public, and of that number, maybe ten to fifteen of them might become classics of the genre. The eighties saw hundreds of horror movies released (I know because I tried to watch every single one of them!) and only a handful of them are considered classics, if they’re remembered at all. I think it will be the same in this renewed era of mainstream horror films.

That said, I do love the more artsy types of horror movies. I’m not a fan of The Conjuring Universe. Those movies mostly bore me. You’re right in that there are only so many times I can get excited about faces jumping out of the dark. I prefer movies that work on dread and paranoia. I loved It Follows and The Witch, and despite that audiences didn’t like them much, I think those are the movies, (and movies like Hereditary, and Mother) that will become the classics of the future. Remember nobody cared about movies like The Thing either, and most people thought that first Nightmare on Elm Street movie was scary, but unimportant.
