Actually, IBM refined the technology and put it on its laptops, the IBM ThinkPad line. Lenovo didn’t own the ThinkPad brand until 2005.
The pointing stick is as much to ThinkPad’s brand as its logo, which even includes the red dot.
Also, while the pointing stick has a learning curve, I came to prefer it over traditional touchpads. It was more accurate, hard to bump while typing, and having it on the home row of the keyboard made it really convenient.
The ThinkPad line is a utilitarian set of products, and if you don’t like that, go buy Fisher Price.
