A Day in the Life of a Writing Consultant Completing an Asynchronous Consultation at Saint Louis University’s Writing Center
At Saint Louis University’s Writing Center, located in the Busch Student Center, writing consultants are required to write their names and the names of the students they will be working with on the whiteboard at their cubicle station. On September 25, 2022, Elise Pinsonneault had three in-person appointments and two asynchronous appointments.
Every single asynchronous appointment begins as Elise Pinsonneault began this appointment by reading the email from the student. Students have the option of submitting their papers electronically over email, as opposed to coming in person to the Busch Student Center on September 25, 2022. The email details the prompt of the paper and what the student wants the consultant to look at while reading their paper.
Taking notes while doing asynchronous consultations is essential for Elise Pinsonneault because she says, “it allows me to make better comments on the student’s papers and not forget anything while sending an email back to the student.” At this particular time, on September 25, 2022, in the Busch Student Center, Elise Pinsonneault is making a note to go back and check the student’s citations after reading through the whole paper.
Looking puzzled as she re-reads over a part of the professor’s prompt, Elise Pinsonneault says she does this often as a writing consultant at Saint Louis University’s Writing Center in the Busch Student Center, and September 25, 2022, was no exception. She says she completes this step in order “to make sure students are on the right track with their papers.”
After finishing up the comments and drafting a summary email to the student, Elise Pinsonneault can shut down her computer for the day. She was able to finish her last consultation on September 25, 2022, in the Busch Student Center early and was excited to get to head back to her dorm after a long day.
