If anything, as a web diehard, this was the thing that repeatedly frustrated me about FxOS.
It stung me occasionally when I’d try talking up the effort at local meet-ups — if we were so all about the open web, then why did we have this weird half-web thing with all its own psuedo-proprietary DOM APIs and packaging system that no one else used?
Many of the mobile devs I talked to were excited about the write-once-run-many-places promise of a web app. The web is quirky, but could be worth dealing with if it got them cross-platform. But, then they’d get really disappointed when apps on a FxOS phone didn’t really look a whole lot like what the rest of the web were doing. This made it just one more platform to target with staff & budget alongside Android & iOS, but without the user base to justify the effort.
Now, things like React Native are kind of stealing this show that I think we really could have been a huge part of.
