Built a mobile operating system from scratch, entirely in the open, and got it to market in less than two years. As far as I know no other team has ever done this.

Not sure of the timeline, but Palm stood up WebOS very quickly, too. They even had a bit of the frontend/backend separation you’ve proposed for access to hardware features via messaging APIs rather than creating new DOM APIs. I was a big fan.
