There’s no thickness of skin to effectively deal with being outnumbered by an internet of assholes demanding your time for free. That kills the love quick, especially when your only “pay” is maybe the gratification that your work matters to someone.

In fact, growing a thick skin just to work on the thing is actually paying the assholes with your stress & frustration. It’s easy to avoid them by turning your back to a project— you just go do something else altogether that makes you happy and maybe just don’t invest much of yourself in the next thing.

No, if folks want a thing built & maintained, they can at least not be assholes about it. This is not an unreasonable demand. Alternatively, you only get things built by people who can cope with assholes— or are in fact motivated by assholes — and that’s a pretty shitty filter function.
