Front & Back Cover of the April issue of Loc Artist

Disclaimer: This is a rough draft overview of what will appear in the April issue of Loc Artist. It was written in one sitting and hasn’t been properly edited for grammatical errors, typos, run-ons, etc — so please excuse any mistakes that you find. If you’re interested in getting your feedback to us in time for your comments to appear in print, or if you’d like to request a specific loc-centric article get in touch with us by the 5th of April 2016.

Let’s get started…
This April we’re going to the World Natural Hair Show in Atlanta, and while we’re there, we’re going to be checking out all things locs. You’ll be able to read all about everything WNHBS in the April issue of Hair Hacker Mag…

…but if you’ve also subscribed to the Loc Artist, you’ll be able to read our articles that focus exclusively on whatever loc-related products, styles, and advice we find while there.

We’ll also be covering some of our reader FAQs about locs in general, and more specifically our femtoloc, nanoloc, and attoloc styles. Check out the feature articles related to each for more info.

Check out some of our femtoloc-related FAQs below…
Q. Do femtolocs matt or get stuck together?
A. Not really. They do tend to wrap around themselves at the root — occasionally making some of the femtolocs appear larger than they actually are, but if you run your fingers through your locs (gently) once a day (for 2 to 3 minutes) as part of your regular maintenance routine, the femtolocs can be easily separated.

For longer locs, you may have to twist several of the locs together after washing while you’re waiting for your locs to mature (this depends on your tolerance for frizz, your curl pattern, and how easily your starter-locs come undone(i.e. whether or not you opted to twist, braid, or otherwise marry your locs as part of the process)).

Q. Are femtolocs difficult to maintain?
A. That depends on how long and thick your hair is. Femtolocs take about 8hrs to re-tighten and re-tightenings are necessary at 1.5 to 2 inches of new-growth. You can both install and re-tighen femtolocs by hand. Check out the video below.

Q. How long do femtolocs take to install?
A. That will depend on the length and thickness of your hair.

Q. Are femtolocs sisterlocks?
A. No. these locs are not installed with a tool (they’re installed and maintained by hand) and the grid pattern used is different.

Q. Can you guys install femtolocs for me?
A. Not at this time. We’re still under construction and we’re not taking on any new appointments until August of 2016, but we have several DIY videos for HH subscribers, if you’re interested in learning how to install femtolocs, nanolocs, or even attolocs yourself.

Not sure what size locs you should opt for, or if you should even opt for locs at all?
No problem. When it comes to getting locs, you should take your time and be absolutely sure that locs are what you want. You can get locs in various sizes, so you want to make sure that you pick the right size locs for your budget, lifestyle, and fashion needs. You can check out several youtube videos related to locs and you’ll quickly find that locs of all sizes and lengths can be versatile. Maintenance will vary with size and the thickness will depend on your curl pattern and the density of your hair. To learn more about locs, the sizes, and what to expect when you loc your hair, check out our April feature article entitled “What to expect when getting loc’d”.

Cheers,
