Summer in Montreal means drinks on a terrace, picnics at the park, and Jazz Fest. Attracting 2.5 millions visitors every year, the Montreal International Jazz Festival is synonymous with the city’s summertime joie de vivre. This summer, the world’s largest jazz festival takes over Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles from June 26 to July 5. The 36th edition of the festival is headlined by local heroes The Barr Brothers with an array of international artists in jazz, R&B, and other genres. One-third of Jazz Fest shows are free and there are outdoor concerts everyday until midnight. There’s no better introduction to our city than this family-friendly festival.

Jazz Fest is based in Montreal’s Place des Arts performing arts centre at the intersection of Saint Catherine Street and Saint Laurent Boulevard, two of Montreal’s best streets for shopping, dining, and nightlife. There’s no shortage of accommodations in this area, as shown in the map below, and it’s one of the best places for a first-time visitor to stay in Montreal. Festival-goers can easily walk to concerts from across the downtown core, the Latin Quarter, and the lower Plateau. Montreal’s metro system, modelled after Paris’ blue trains and rubber tires, makes it easy to stay just out of earshot of the late-night shows.

Jazz Fest is a great opportunity for your family’s summer vacation and Montreal has no shortage of activities for kids. Montreal’s Science Centre, Botanical Gardens, and Insectarium provide lots of fun between concerts. A family-friendly itinerary calls for accommodation in a walkable neighbourhood close to a metro station. As our map shows, there are plenty of options in downtown Montreal right next to the Jazz Fest and in quieter quarters.

Jazz Fest is also a chance to get away from the kids and take in some culture. Montreal’s French heritage is evident in the romantic Old Port section of the city, with its winding cobblestone streets and historic churches, like the Notre Dame Basilica. Montreal’s art museums and cultural destinations provide some peace and quiet during a busy Jazz Fest weekend. The best accommodations for this experience, according to our map, are located in the Old Port on Montreal’s waterfront. Staying here makes it easy to walk to festival concerts and the fashionable restaurants of Vieux Montreal.

The Old Port is the place to stay for a cultural trip.
