It’s About Time.

I can’t help but think a lot about how people spend their time and attention these days, and what it’s really worth. I don’t want to get too existential, actually yes I do…

If time is the most valuable resource we have, then what we do with it matters, a lot. Who or what we give our time to, is the most precious thing we have to give. As individuals, we really should perceive our time to be more valuable than all the money, crude, gold, houses, cars, or bitcoin in this world, as it is available in finite and limited supply, in the most absolute terms.

There’s no negotiating, no manipulating, no jockeying, and no getting it back once you’ve spent it. Once it’s gone, it’s gone. And anybody with a solution to create more time for people on this earth will have cracked the code to unimaginable wealth. But for now, I just want to mention a few lessons I’ve learned about time.

  1. Time goes by fast, figuratively and literally. Don’t kid yourself. (Pun intended, you know, because time goes by so slowly for kids right?) ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  2. Time changes things, unforeseeably, immeasurably, and often irreparably, and that can be both good or bad, depending on how you spent your time.
  3. Some of the best times, are the spaces in between, when you pause, think, and reflect on life and your experiences. There’s no such thing as free time, but freeing yourself up to enjoy some quality time, matters.

It’s kind of funny how time cliches are so closely related to words we typically associate with currency and value like “free time”, “spending time”, or “quality time”. All that being said, I wish you all the best and continued success investing your time! 🍷

PS. Just a quick note in case you were wondering what some others were disappointed in having spent their time on, this is an article on LifeHack.org by Clare Hudson called 20 Things People Regret the Most Before They Die. It has some good insight into some regrettable time investments that may help you avoid the same mistakes.
