Startup~hiring: Who would you hire?

I have worked at University of Waterloo’s startup incubator from Jan — April15. Saying that I have learnt a lot is an understatement. During my time at Velocity(thats what they call it), I had interacted with more than 20 startups, each had its own story. A common problem I noticed was hiring, they don’t seem to be hiring/ having an oppurtunity to hire the right people. In this context I had a question (this was even pointed out by Vivek Ravishankar aka founder of HackerRank):

If you want to scale your company from point-a to point-b; do you hire someone who’s at point-c (c > b) who has already crossed a & b or someone who is between a & b but very smart?

This is a very tough choice to make but perhaps essential at some or the other point in a startups life. I am still looking for the right answer..But if you ask me, I would say that I would choose the latter because:

“while the risk of choosing the latter person is the doubt if she will scale in the future, the risk of choosing the former person in a growth stage company is not getting her hands dirty to even get to point-b and/or bring in the wrong outlook.”

What’s you say?

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
