After the excitement of Slack’s conversational onboarding, many other products began exploring chat based interfaces. But there are two concerns I have:

  1. Slack is a chat app. A conversational interface for onboarding not only humanizes the initial engagement but teaches users the basics of how to use the product. Many non-chat apps have adopted conversational interfaces but don’t benefit from the latter.
  2. There are other ways to humanize the experience without a full-blown chat interface. For example, simply using a conversational tone in the copy for your form or highlighting the team behind the product. There are a whole spectrum of solutions to explore.

Thanks for the great write-up. There is a lot to learn from the success, and failures, of different chat interfaces. We are in the early days!
