Creativity is a mindset

I was reading Seth Godin’s thoughts on creativity the other day and he posits that

“when creativity becomes a profession, then it stops becoming creative”

But this is more a case of correlation than causation. Creativity stops when you stop thinking creatively. If you start thinking about an activity with a professional mindset, it’s only natural that you stop thinking about it creatively.

Godin lists ad agencies, authors and movies as examples of creative pursuits that suffer when they become professional. However these are artistic activities that have been turned into products, not creativity themselves.

It is true that a creative mindset is often associated with artistic pursuits, but creativity is not limited to the arts. Creativity can be applied to almost any task or problem, all that is required is the willingness to approach the task or problem with a creative mindset.
