Traveling to a mountains sounds boring but sometimes it can be as exciting and adventurous as hiking or climbing itself. What can be so great about roads? Here are 4 examples of most crazy and breathtaking roads in the world — the whole journey is the adventure.

Furka pass, Switzerland

This famous road is located in Swiss Alps and was used as a location in the James Bond film Goldfinger. With an elevation of 2,429 metres connects canton of Uri with the canton of Valais. Furkapass is the fourth highest mountain pass in Switzerland, and it was built in 1867.

The Milion dollar highway, Colorado

U.S. route 550 is characterized by steep cliffs, narrow lanes, and a lack of guardrails. The Highway was built in the late 1930s and it’s one of the nation’s most spectacular drives. The snow season starts in early October, and snow will often close the road in winter.

Trollstigen, Norway

Trollstigen or in English Trolls’ Ladder is one of the world’s most famous and dangerous scenic roads. It took more than 8 years to construct it and during top tourist season about 2300 vehicles pass daily. Road is closed during fall and winter season.

The Karakorum highway

The KKR is the highest paved international road in the world which connects China and Pakistan. It was bulldozed in the 1960s and during construction more than 800 Pakistanis and 200 Chinese workers lost their lives. You can find there also the highest border crossing in the world, at an elevation of over 4,800 metres.

Milford road in New Zealand

Milford Road through Fjordland national park connects to Milford Sound — one of the filming locations for the Lord of Rings. Over one million people visit Fjordland every year and Milford sound is their ”must see”. It was named as the ‘eighth wonder of the world’ and it’s protected by UNESCO.
